Steel Technology: Why Prefab?

Prefab reduces costs while minimizing risk and saving time. EcoSteel uses proven construction methods and leverages a nationwide network of industry professionals. They use certified components that are easy to assemble using standard tools.

EcoSteel’s unique approach is part of the reason why they stand out from the competition. They use commercial-grade steel framing that’s wrapped in steel insulated panels. This allows for superior strength and energy efficiency while still giving clients freedom in the design department.

EcoSteel works with clients to provide a 3D model and preliminary details before helping them find a prefab kit that meets their needs.

Prefab offers many advantages, including the ability to control costs, build according to their own schedules and use readily available materials.

All buildings from EcoSteel are created using Parametric 3Dimensional Design Technology, which offers a level of design precision that ensures the highest level of quality. At the same time, it also allows for easy scheduling and accurate budgeting.

The design process starts with a bolted, 14-gauge steel frame structure based on the client’s requirements. For quick on-site assembly, EcoSteel uses I-Beam Steel Structures that are pre-cut and pre-drilled.

The EcoSteel Difference

Modern Steel Buildings

EcoSteel works closely with clients and their architects to ensure that their visions come to life. The building process is simple and straightforward.

EcoSteel offers a wide range of services and benefits to clients, including:

#1 – Architect Design Review

EcoSteel’s team will review the architect-supplied schematic design to make sure that it’s compatible with their steel system. Their team of experts will look for any potential issues with the interior or exterior before moving on to the next stage.

The company’s all-steel system is designed with flexibility in mind, which means that most architectural plans will be compatible. Their steel frame can accommodate any shape, and their clear-span structures free up space while eliminating the need for load-bearing walls.

EcoSteel also offers waterproofing materials, panel alignment options and a variety of panel design options to preserve the design integrity of the building.

#2 – Streamlined Permitting

EcoSteel uses only pre-engineered steel components, which allows them to maintain a thorough building information management, or BIM, platform. This can help streamline the permitting process.

Once the final design has been approved, EcoSteel will create the finalized structural drawings. They also provide the structural engineering stamp needed for permitting as well as high-resolution renderings to help with the city’s approval process.

#3 – Superior Construction

There’s a reason why EcoSteel is a leader in steel frame houses and commercial structures. All of their buildings are designed to meet or exceed local building codes. They also resist:

  • Earthquakes
  • Wildfires
  • Floods
  • Hurricanes

Much of the superior strength and design flexibility offered by EcoSteel is due to the steel frame used in all of their buildings.  For our money, they are a true leader in the industry.

#4 – Simplified Build Process

EcoSteel’s fabrication process allows them to flat pack and ship their structures directly to the job site.

To simplify the construction process, all parts are labeled, numbered and listed in a thorough assembly manual. This manual can easily be used by any certified steel erector.

All parts and pieces arrive pre-engineered and prefabricated, which accelerates and simplifies the construction process.

#5 – Energy Efficiency

EcoSteel’s building shells have roof and wall panels that are pre-insulated. These insulated panels help make buildings more energy efficient and offer net zero energy capabilities.

EcoSteel’s insulated panels offer:

  • Exceptional energy efficiency for lower building operational costs
  • Superior thermal performance
  • Quicker construction schedules

For commercial structures, a quicker construction time means that your business can be up and running earlier than expected.

EcoSteel buildings are also compatible with most solar panels, which allows clients to take advantage of cost-saving alternative energy solutions.

#6 – Daylighting Capabilities

EcoSteel offers polycarbonate panels that are translucent, allowing natural light to flow through. Their daylighting solution provides another way to save on energy costs by reducing the need for lighting during the day.

These translucent panels integrate perfectly into their wall panels, and they include standard design options. EcoSteel’s translucent panels offer the following benefits and features:

  • Superior thermal insulation
  • Excellent light transmission or diffusion
  • Strength and durability
  • UV-protected surface
  • Weather resistance

#7 – Environmental Stewardship

EcoSteel is committed to providing buildings that are both energy efficient and eco-friendly. EcoSteel panels:

  • Are free of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that pollute the environment.
  • Have zero Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP).
  • Meet the blowing agent requirements set by the EPA to reduce Global Warming Potential.

California Steel Frame Homes

Mt. Diablo Steel & Glass Home (Danville, CA)

An expansive and imposing prefab steel frame home that sits opposite of Mt. Diablo in Danville, CA. The 10,300 square foot home, designed by Architect Bendrew Jong, is comprised of both steel and glass.

The home is outfitted with photovoltaic solar panels and offers a high thermal efficiency using 5” R41 roof panels and 3” R24 wall panels.

The modern home features clean horizontal lines complemented by expansive windows that bring the outdoors inside. Nearly every room in the house offers impressive views of the sprawling landscape.

The two-story home offers a complex system of balconies and outdoor entertaining areas. The kitchen area features stainless steel appliances that complement the steel and glass construction. Other features include an impressive wine cellar, skylights, large walk-in closets, and open working and living spaces.

Thanks to EcoSteel’s factory-engineered framework, this home came together quickly.

Steel Prefab Modern Farmhouse

EcoSteel Private Ski Ranch (Park City, Utah)

The Private Ski Ranch in Park City, Utah is a modern farmhouse featuring an all-steel, custom construction. The home, which sits in a remote location, offers off-grid living:

  • 10,000-gallon water storage
  • Solar power
  • Grey water tanks used for irrigation

Additional security features offer peace of mind.

The project was a challenging one due to limited site access and stringent rules against disturbing nearby vegetation. The steep sloping of the site required specialized modeling to expand the roof line while adhering to code restrictions.

The home, which spans three stories, features clear span rooms for maximum design flexibility. Walls of glass invite the outdoors inside without compromising on energy efficiency. Residents enjoy expansive views of the 14-acre property thanks to the vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The open floor plan allows for easy entertaining and gathering. The home features two master suites, two kitchens, several outdoor entertaining areas and parking.

In this all-steel home, the beams and trusses have been left exposed for a unique industrial look. Other interior materials include:

  • Stone and wood floors
  • Granite countertops
  • Custom cabinetry
  • Glass light fixtures

The dual master suites boast sitting areas with grand fireplaces and luxurious bathtubs with views of the mountainous landscape.

Designed with the future in mind, the home was hardwired to accommodate smart home technology and includes energy-efficient features.

The home’s remote location is not easily accessible by the fire department. To help address this problem, the home’s wall and roof panels were fabricated with fire resistant materials.

The insulated panels used to build this home are UL listed and backed by a 20-year warranty.

Prefab Commercial Building

Catskill Brewery (New York)

Although EcoSteel is well-known for their steel home designs, they also excel in the commercial sector. The Catskill Brewery project is a prime example of EcoSteel’s ability to meet the client’s needs.

For this project, the client wanted a large open space that could house their brewing equipment. Steel buildings are the ideal choice for this type of structure, particularly clear span buildings with no need for load-bearing walls or beams.

To bring this project to life, EcoSteel partnered with River Architects to create custom clerestory windows and trusses.

The building’s interior offers 12,000 square feet of space, providing plenty of room for the brewery’s fermentation, events and tastings.

The brewery’s northern location meant planning for extreme temperatures and snow during the winter months. The clients required extreme insulation to keep their heating and cooling costs as low as possible.

EcoSteel’s panels came pre-engineered with insulation to help maintain optimal indoor temperatures. For further insulation, the roof was designed to include a ”living” section with plants to help with runoff capture and keep the building energy efficient.

For safety, the building was designed with a fire-resistant steel frame. It was also outfitted with fire rated panels to protect the brewery’s combustible equipment.

Solar panels were installed on the roof of the building to further reduce energy costs and the brewery’s environmental impact.
