Indoor soccer has no single universal field size the way outdoor soccer does. Dimensions vary by level of play, by whether the facility uses boards, and by whether you’re building for indoor soccer or futsal — which are genuinely different sports with different fields.

Arena soccer: 200′ x 85′

Professional arena soccer, played in the Major Arena Soccer League, uses a turf field approximately 200 feet long by 85 feet wide — the same dimensions as a standard hockey rink, which is exactly why arena soccer teams so often share venues with hockey franchises.

The field is enclosed by dasherboards topped with plexiglass, and the ball stays in play off the walls. Goals are set into the boards and measure 8 feet high by 14 feet wide. Teams field six players a side — a goalkeeper and five outfield players — across four 15-minute quarters, with unlimited substitution on the fly.

If you’re building to host arena-level play, the boards and glass are part of the structural planning, not an afterthought. They need anchoring, and the building has to accommodate them inside its footprint.

US indoor standard: 185′ x 75′

The most common size for a purpose-built commercial indoor soccer facility in the United States is 185 feet by 75 feet, with a 20-foot minimum ceiling. This is the size most leagues and pay-to-play facilities are built around, and it accommodates 6v6 and 7v7 play comfortably.

At 75 feet of width, this field needs a clear span your building kit has to deliver in one piece.

Youth and small-sided fields

Youth and recreational fields range from 140 to 210 feet long and 60 to 90 feet wide, with 140′ x 60′ a common entry point. Small-sided play — 4v4 and 5v5 — works well at these dimensions and lets a facility run multiple simultaneous games on a divided field.

A 60-foot width matters commercially as well as athletically: it’s the widest clear span that prices from our standard kit rates rather than requiring individual engineering. For a first facility on a tight budget, sizing at 60 feet wide is the single biggest cost lever available to you.

Futsal is a different build

Futsal is not indoor soccer played somewhere smaller. It’s a separate sport with its own governing rules, played on a hard court rather than turf, with no boards — the ball goes out of play at the touchline — and a smaller, heavier, low-bounce ball.

FIFA specifies 20m x 40m (roughly 66′ x 131′) for standard play, with international matches ranging from 38–42m long by 20–25m wide. Non-international courts can go as small as 25m x 16m (82′ x 52′). Goals are 2m x 3m — about 6.5′ x 10′.

Practically, this matters because a futsal court is smaller, cheaper, and needs no turf or dasherboards, but it does need a proper hard-court surface. Facilities that want both usually build to indoor soccer dimensions and mark futsal courts inside them.

Ceiling height

Twenty feet is the working minimum for indoor soccer and it is a genuine minimum, not a recommendation — a lower ceiling changes how the game is played, because lofted balls hit the roof and stop play constantly.

Twenty-five feet is what you want if the budget allows. Facilities built at 20 feet function; facilities built at 25 feet play properly. Futsal is more forgiving at 13 feet minimum, though FIFA specifies 26 feet for international competition.

Remember that clear height is not eave height. On a rigid-frame building the rafter at the peak sits well above the frame at the sidewall, so a building advertised at 25 feet of eave may deliver noticeably less usable clearance near the walls. Specify clear height at the sidewall when you request a quote.

Clear span is the number that drives everything. A 60-foot span is standard engineering. An 85-foot span is a meaningfully heavier frame. A 100-foot span is heavier again. When you compare quotes, compare spans first and square footage second — a wider building at the same area costs more, not less.

Add to the field footprint anything the facility needs alongside it: locker rooms, restrooms, a reception desk, concessions, equipment storage, and spectator seating. Bleachers in particular change both the footprint and the occupancy classification, which changes your permitting path. Decide on seating before the building is engineered.

Permitting and engineering

Indoor soccer facilities classify as public assembly occupancy, which brings egress, fire suppression, accessibility, and often parking requirements a storage building never triggers. Start the conversation with your building department before you finalise the design, not after — permitting is routinely the longest stage of the project.

Choosing Indoor Soccer Field Builders

Indoor Soccer Facility Design

Design decisions are worth making in a specific order, because several of them are irreversible once the slab is poured.

Field orientation and count. Decide whether the building holds one full field or a divisible field that splits into two or three small-sided pitches. Divisible layouts generate far more revenue per hour from youth programming, and the decision affects netting, lighting zones, and building width.

Boards or run-off. Board-enclosed fields play faster and need less perimeter space, but the boards are a real cost. Open-touchline fields need several feet of run-off beyond each line, which means a wider building. Cheaper structure, more square footage — the trade runs both ways.

Turf and surface. Turf pile height, infill type, and shock pad all affect play and all sit on the slab. Specify the turf system before the foundation, not after — retrofitting drainage or a different substrate is expensive and slow.

Lighting. Aim for even coverage without glare at ball height. LED systems are standard now and the operating cost difference over a facility’s life is substantial. Lighting mounts to the frame, so the layout has to be known during engineering.

Netting and ball containment. Overhead and perimeter netting protects spectators and support spaces. It anchors to the structure, which again means specifying it during design.

HVAC and ventilation. Indoor soccer facilities generate a lot of heat and humidity from active players. Under-specified ventilation is one of the most common complaints from facility operators, and it’s much cheaper to size correctly upfront.

Support spaces. Locker rooms, restrooms, reception, concessions, offices, and equipment storage. A mezzanine along one sidewall is an efficient way to add spectator seating and office space without extending the footprint — but it must be designed in, because retrofitting a mezzanine into an erected building is costly.
